In 1979, while on vacation in Morocco, a young engineer and inventor named Don Schoendorfer witnessed the agonizing plight of a woman struggling to drag herself across a busy thoroughfare.
Unable to forget the scene, Don would eventually leave a successful career in the biomedical field and design a durable, comfortable, and cost-effective wheelchair. His unique design became the cornerstone of Free Wheelchair Mission, the nonprofit organization he founded in 2001.
Free Wheelchair Mission is a humanitarian, faith-based nonprofit that designs and manufactures cost-efficient, durable wheelchairs for individuals living with disabilities in developing countries.
In collaboration with a network of like-minded partners, Free Wheelchair Mission has distributed 1.5 million wheelchairs to individuals in need in 95 countries around the world, providing renewed dignity, independence, and hope through the gift of mobility, at no cost to the recipient.
The Built Different Community Impact Fund was created to support organizations across Orange County that are making a meaningful difference in the lives of neurodivergent individuals and their families.
Rather than limiting our impact to a single organization, the Community Impact Fund allows Built Different to invest in multiple nonprofits, programs, and initiatives that align with our mission of celebrating neurodiversity, expanding opportunities, and creating stronger communities.
Every player, sponsor, donor, and volunteer helps grow this fund.
Together, we're supporting organizations that provide:
Educational opportunities
Employment and workforce development
Family support services
Social and community programs
Inclusion initiatives
Advocacy and awareness
Innovative programs that celebrate neurodiversity
Our goal is simple:
Support organizations that help people thrive—not just survive.
As Built Different grows each year, so will the Community Impact Fund, allowing us to expand our reach, support additional organizations, and create an even greater impact throughout Orange County.
Following each Built Different tournament, 1Purpose Network will work alongside community leaders and trusted advisors to identify Orange County organizations whose missions align with the goals of the Community Impact Fund.
Funding decisions will be based on measurable community impact, organizational integrity, and opportunities to improve the lives of neurodivergent individuals and their families.
Our commitment is to ensure that every dollar entrusted to the Community Impact Fund creates meaningful, lasting change.
We believe every person brings unique strengths, perspectives, and talents to the world.
By investing in organizations that embrace those differences, we hope to create more opportunities for individuals to build relationships, find meaningful employment, strengthen families, and fully participate in their communities.
Because when we invest in different minds...
